Dallas Police Officer Shoots Man With Rifle on Silver Comet Trail

The weapon, which police say Daron Holcombe pointed at officers, turned out to be an air rifle with a scope, the GBI says.

DALLAS, GA — A Dallas Police officer shot a man on the Silver Comet Trail on Wednesday after he reportedly pointed a rifle at officers.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting, which happened after 2 p.m. at the trail's Rambo Trailhead.

Responding to calls of shots being fired, Dallas Police and Paulding County Sheriff's deputies say they found Daron Holcombe, 26, of Rockmart, holding a rifle.

At some point, he pointed the rifle at officers and Dallas Police officer Phillip Burkett fired his weapon at Holcombe, striking him, the GBI said.

Holcombe was taken to Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, where he is listed in critical condition.

After the shooting, officers found Holcombe's weapon to be a replica air rifle with a scope.

The GBI will continue an independent investigation to determine exactly what happened during the shooting. Upon completion, it will turn its findings over to the Paulding Judicial Circuit District Attorney's office for review.
