Hiram: Despite Construction, Downtown Businesses Remain Open

The summer heat weighs heavy on us all. But in metro areas, so can traffic delays and roadway construction. The City of Hiram is experiencing that very thing in its immediate downtown area. We are asking that all residents, business owners and commuters exercise patience and pardon our progress as we install sewer lines to and from our new lift station.

The most important thing everyone needs to know and be aware of is that all businesses in the downtown Hiram area are open and will remain open during this significant construction project even though road closure signs, Nixle alerts and uneven pavement may create a different impression.

The sewer project went into full swing last month and will continue 180 days into the end of November. The primary roadway affected is Main Street from Arnold Lane to the northeast and Hwy 92 to the southwest. This project will also continue through South Forty subdivision along South Forty Pass east and west. There has been and will continue to be intermittent road closures and delays as the sewer and water lines are being installed.

Main Street will be completely closed at the Main Street and Beatty Street railroad crossing until at least next Wednesday, July 29th as the contractor bores under the rail line. This will impact thru traffic. But, again, businesses will be open during their normal business hours unless the owners post otherwise.

In addition to the Council approved sewer project, the Council also approved a streetscape project on July 7th. The contracts have been signed and once the notice to proceed is issued, this project will take approximately 180 days into February of 2016. The streetscape not only includes sidewalks, streetlights and new pavement, it also includes much needed water lines from Hwy 92 to Arnold Lane along Main Street. There will also be improvements to the intersection of Main Street, North Avenue and Powder Springs Street which includes a turn lane on Main Street to North Avenue and Powder Springs Street.

According to city manager Robbie Rokovitz, “We understand that our residents, businesses and visitors have experienced some untimely and frustrating inconveniences including some water and gas line breaks associated with this construction project.” “The contractors and staff are doing and will continue to do everything within reason to ensure the effects of this project are negligible to our Hiram family,” continued Rokovitz.
