Huey Luey's: A Good Mexican Restaurant in Hiram

If you enjoy good Tex-Mex, try Huey Luey's.

Concerned another Mexican restaurant has opened in Hiram, I was apprehensive about trying it. However, I was intrigued by the name, Huey Luey’s Fine Mexican Food. Skeptical fine Mexican food could mean higher prices and gourmet style, I was definitely apprehensive. Typically, I try to research restaurants before I dine; however, I was unable to discover much information beyond location and menu. Emails to the “partner” have not been answered as of posting time. Nevertheless, I decided to try on a Thursday evening for dinner.

Promptly seated, the casual, bright dining room, filled with colorful Mexican trinkets and displays, was festive. Music was faintly playing in the background, contributing to a relaxed atmosphere, but with the ability of having a conversation.  Immediately, we received the traditional, but complimentary corn tortilla chips with salsa. Very light, crisp chips were excellent, accompanied by a satisfying mild, fresh salsa. Habitually requesting white cheese dip at every Mexican restaurant I visit, Huey Luey’s was quick and hot with a rich, smooth texture.

Entrees ordered included the Chicken Burrito Supreme and Beef Enchiladas. The burrito was typical in size, served with melted cheese, lettuce, sour cream and tomato. Although filling, I wanted more meat and flavor. I tasted no essence of spices and zest that I would’ve like. Refried beans as a side were a good accompaniment, providing more substance to the entrée. The beef enchiladas were of a good portion, with a red guajillo chile sauce and melted cheese. The entrée included rice and refried beans. Full of more flavor and spice, the enchiladas had a more traditional Tex-Mex gusto.

Service was above average, very prompt, courteous and pleasant.  Customarily, I find “Tex-Mex” restaurants to be less expensive than most family dining experiences. This was no exception. Two entrees, an appetizer and two adult beverages totaled less than $30. Most plates range from $6.95 to $10.95.  A less expensive lunch menu is served Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Salads, quesadillas, nachos, fajitas and tacos are available. With a full bar and daily specialty drinks, patrons have plenty of choices. A limited kids menu is also offered. Although not ordered during my visit, desserts include flan, churros, fried ice cream or sopapillas. For couples on Friday night dates, live entertainment is at the restaurant from 7 to 11 p.m.

Customers of Huey Luey’s Fine Mexican Food should expect good service, a comfortable dining room but typical Tex-Mex food, with slightly above average quality.
