Man Killed In Shooting With Paulding Deputies Id'ed: GBI

The man is accused of shooting at deputies while they were trying to conduct a traffic stop Sunday.

DALLAS, GA — The man who died in a shooting involving Paulding County deputies Sunday morning in Dallas has been identified.

Deputies were attempting to stop a car around 10 a.m. near the intersection of Bobo and Macland roads, according to the Paulding County Sheriff's Office. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified him as Wayne Denton, 36, of, Rockmart.

Denton is accused of pulling out a pistol, according to the sheriff's office.

According to the GBI, Denton shot at the deputies who then shot back at him.

The driver sped off, prompting a chase, according to the sheriff's office. The chase ended in the city limits, where Denton's car crashed on West Memorial Drive near a railroad trestle and furniture store, authorities said.

There was more gunfire exchanged; after which, Denton was removed from the car and deputies began rendering aid, authorities said.

He later died at the hospital, authorities said.

The GBI said a handgun was recovered from Denton's car.

It is unclear if he died from the shooting or from wounds sustained in the crash.

The GBI is investigating the case.
