The GBI and Union County Sheriff's Office say the teacher, now 40, had sex with her student in 2013.

BLAIRSVILLE, GA — A 40-year-old former gym teacher in north Georgia has been charged with having sex in 2013 with a teen student who had just completed the 8th grade.

Shawnetta D. Reece, 40, of Blairsville, is a former middle-school physical education teacher in the Union County school system. She is charged with child molestation and sexual assault by a person with supervisory or disciplinary authority, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced Tuesday.

The GBI was called in by the Union County Sheriff's office to help with the investigation after the sheriff's office received information claiming she'd had sexual contact with the student.

The bureau says that investigators were able to determine that Reece was sexually involved with a 15-year-old student in 2013.

The student was moving from the eighth grade into the ninth grade at the time, the GBI said. Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be provided to the Enotah Judicial Circuit District Attorney for prosecution, a GBI spokesperson said.
