Paulding Deputy Shoots Threatening Suspect: Sheriff

The sheriff's office said the man raised a pistol at deputies, one of whom responded by shooting his shoulder and arm with a shotgun.

DALLAS, GA — A Paulding County deputy shot a man on Friday, Aug. 16,with a shotgun as the man raised a pistol towards him, according to the Paulding County Sheriff's Office. It was around 8:30 p.m. Friday when police got a call about a domestic dispute in which a drunk man was suspected of threatening family members with a gun.

Trystan Payne, 22, was inside the house when police arrived, the sheriff's release said. Several family members outside said he was inside and possibly armed.

Deputies went into the house and made contact with Payne. He came out of a room with a pistol in hand, the release said. The deputies ordered him to drop it. He failed to comply the release says, and began to raise the pistol at the deputies.

Deputy Geoffrey Morris, armed with a shotgun, fired, hitting Payne in the arm and shoulder.

Payne ran away, police say, to the back of the house, but was quickly taken into custody. The release says he was given medical aid by police as they called EMS to assist. Payne was taken to an Atlanta area hospital for the non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Early Saturday, Payne was released from the hospital and sent to Paulding County Jail, where he's being held without bond on two felony aggravated assault charges.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting while Deputy Morris has been put on standard paid administrative leave, the release said.
