The National Weather Service cancelled a Winter Storm Watch for many metro counties Sunday afternoon as forecasts suggested the area of impact will be farther north than earlier thought.

The weather issued the storm watch Saturday, saying as much as 2 inches of sleet and snow could fall on Atlanta.

The winter storm will still hit Georgia hard — A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the north Georgia mountains — but its blow to Atlanta will be softer.

Still, the weather service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 7 a.m. Monday to 7 a.m. Tuesday for an area through the northern suburbs.

Included in the advisory are the following counties:

Banks, Barrow, Bartow, Chattooga, Cherokee, Cobb, DeKalb, Floyd, Forsyth, Gordon, Gwinnett, Hall, Haralson, Jackson, Madison, north Fulton, Paulding, Polk.

The weather service said a wintry mix of freezing rain and sleet is possible, but the duration is expected to be brief, with little accumulation.

A mix of sleet and freezing rain will begin after sunrise Monday, the weather service says, but will turn to rain throughout the day.

Another shot of freezing rain is possible by Tuesday morning as the weather system moves out of the state.

Some travel may be impacted by ice, especially on bridges and overpasses.

Lows are expected to be in the mid to upper 20s Monday morning, rising to the upper 30s to 40 in the afternoon. Lows Tuesday will be in the upper 20s.
