Georgia Football Player's Death: 'We Have Lost One of Our Children'

Douglas County High's Zyrees Oliver, 17, was taken off life support Monday. Family says he collapsed after drinking 4 gallons of fluids.

Douglas County High football player Zyrees Oliver, who collapsed at home last week after practice, was taken off life support early Monday morning.

Oliver, 17, had been on a ventilator, which was removed with the family’s blessings around 1 a.m., WSB-TV reported. He had been at WellStar Kennestone Hospital since collapsing late Tuesday, Aug. 5, several hours after practice.

The GBI will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Oliver, an offensive lineman, suffered cramps after practice, then collapsed at home later, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. The family called 911 early Wednesday morning.

Doctors reportedly told the family that the teen had severe swelling around his brain. The family believes Oliver “over-hydrated” after practice by drinking two gallons each of water and a sports drink, according to media reports. However, there is no official word on what caused the player’s collapse or death.

Douglas County High Principal Dr. Tim Scott made the following statement, also posted on the school’s Facebook page.

“Zyrees was part of the Tiger Family since the end of his sophomore year but during that short time he touched many lives. Zyrees was a blessing to his football and track teammates, his classmates, coaches and our school staff. The death of any young person is a loss that, in one way or another, affects each of us. We have lost one of our children but we will not forget his academic, athletic and overall impact and achievement he had on and while at our school.

“The crisis team will be at Douglas County High School to help students and staff cope with this loss. We suggest parents discuss this with your children and respond to any questions that arise.”

A webpage has been created on the GoFundMe.com fundrasing website to raise money to help the family return Oliver to his home state of New Jersey for the funeral.
