Fire Destroys House In Douglas County

DOUGLAS COUNTY, GA—Investigators are looking into what caused a house fire this week in the Winston area of Douglas County. The fire happened Wednesday near Veterans Memorial Highway and Campground Road around 7 p.m.

"The first firefighters who arrived on the scene at 7:14 p.m. found heavy flames coming from the house," said Rick Martin, Douglas County Fire Department spokesman. "The flames were so heavy, firefighters' initial response was defensive before attacking the flames and working to put it out."

Firefighters soon gained control of the fire and conducted a search of the structure. After a secondary search was done, firefighters determined no one was home, officials said.

"Firefighters were also able to determine there was no power to the structure at the time of the fire," Martin said. "The utility company confirmed that the house had no electricity, but it's unclear who and where the owners of the home were at the time of the blaze."

A fire investigator was called to the scene. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office assisted with traffic as the intersection of Veterans Memorial Highway was closed for a few hours.
