Grand Jury Indicts Canada in Step-Grandfather's Killing

Patrick Canada, 25, of Douglasville, is accused of shooting his grandmother and step-grandfather as well as firing at police.

DOUGLASVILLE, GA — A grand jury has indicted a Douglasville man on murder charges in the August shooting death of his step-grandfather.

Patrick Canada, 25, who police say shot both his grandmother and step-grandfather before exchanging fire with police, was indicted on 12 counts. They include felony murder, malice murder, kidnapping, aggravated assault and aggravated assault on a peace officer.

The indictments were handed down August 26 and made public Wednesday by Douglas County District Attorney Brian Fortner.

On August 7 at about 9:17 p.m., Douglasville Police were called to a home in the Chapel Hill subdivision for what appeared to be a domestic dispute.

Officer Thomas Lee Altman said he heard a commotion inside the home on the 4900 block of Lake Hollow Court. Upon entering the home's foyer, he said he was confronted by Canada, who was brandishing a firearm.

He shouted verbal commands, according to a police news release, but Canada pointed his gun at the officer. The two exchanged gunfire, but missed one another, police said.

Altman's gun malfunctioned, the police report says, so he retreated to his patrol car to get a rifle. As he did so, he saw Pamela Lynn Henn, 64, leave the rear door of the home with multiple gunshot wounds.

He confronted Canada, who exited through the same rear door, and was able to take him into custody without further incident.

Once Altman and other officers secured Canada, they searched the home and found Douglas Keith Henn, 59, dead from multiple gunshots.

The Henns and Canada lived together in the home, police said.

Police said it appeared that Canada and his step-grandfather were having an argument before Canada got a gun and began shooting.
