New Details Released in Douglasville Murder-Suicide That Killed 5

DCSO spokesman: "I can't tell you why. All I can say is he snapped, or he had enough."

Investigators are putting the pieces together on what happened Saturday in the murder-suicide that killed five people and critically injured two others near Douglasville.

What the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the rest of the community doesn’t know is what was going through Cedric Prather’s mind when he opened fire on his ex-wife, her boyfriend and several of his own children around 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at 3640 Willow Tree Circle.

Capt. Bruce Ferguson said told reporters at a Monday morning press conference that investigators believe an argument over taxes and child support may have prompted the shootings, although that still made it difficult to understand why.

Police said Prather killed ex-wife Latoya A. Andrews, her boyfriend Joseph Terry Brown, and two of Prather’s children, London Prather, 9, and Jeremiah Prather, 7.

Two other children were taken to the hospital in critical condition — Joseph Brown’s daughter, Jada, 7, and Andrews’ oldest child, Demesha Owens, 15.

After shooting his victims, Prather turned his .45 cal gun on himself, police said.

Andrews, Brown and one of the children were shot inside the house, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. The newspaper also reported the woman’s 13-year-old son was not at home during the shootings, but saw the police cars when he returned home from playing basketball.

Ferguson told reporters at least eight shots were fired, and the shooter had more ammo on him.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe page has been set up to help with the burial expenses. As of early Monday afternoon, nearly $6,000 had been raised.

The GoFundMe page creator posted the following:

Saturday February 7th 2015 was a very tragic day. We had to say goodbye to three beautiful people. On behalf of Latoya Andrews family I have set up this page to help assist with burial costs and medical costs of her two surviving children. Latoya and three of her four children and two other people were brutally gunned down in their home where Latoya and two of her children passed and one is critical condition and one is unharmed(physically). The family has no insurance policies and need every ounce of love and support they can get. I am asking that everyone I know or that knows Latoya and her family to please share this. I will update more later.

Prather and Andrews had been divorced about five years after being married about 11 years, police said.
