Two Douglas Deputies On Admin Leave After Fatal Shooting

Two Douglas Sheriff's deputies are on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of an investigation that is being conducted the GBI.

DOUGLASVILLE, GA — Two Douglas County Sheriff's deputies are on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigation that is being conducted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigations. Douglas County Sheriff Tim Pounds said he looked at deputies' body cameras, frame by frame, and "they did what they were trained to do," when they shot and killed a man Wednesday

The two officers involved in this incident are Deputy James Miller and Lieutenant Charles Mitchell. During this incident Deputy James Miller used his firearm to stop an attack on both deputies by Justin Oakes who used a knife to stab Miller at least two times, according to the sheriff's office. Oakes died on the scene.

Justin Oakes, 32, dialed 911 after spending several hours in the public bathroom at the Sheriff's Office. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office to investigate the shooting. At approximately 2:15 a.m., two deputies with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call.

Deputy James Miller is two year employee of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in good standing, and is
assigned to the Patrol Division. Deputy Miller has prior military service with the United States Marine
Corp.

Mitchell is a 28 year veteran of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department in good
standing, and is currently assigned as a shift supervisor to the Patrol Division. Lieutenant Charles
Mitchell also has prior military service with the Unites States Army.
