Funeral Services Announced For Marietta Teacher Killed In Crash

Allison Carroll of Powder Springs taught third grade at Dowell Elementary School; she died Sunday in a car crash.

ACWORTH, GA — Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 28, for a Marietta elementary school teacher who was killed in a head-on car crash in Acworth Sunday. Allison Carroll, 24, of Powder Springs, taught third grade at Cobb County's Dowell Elementary School and was engaged to be married in two months.

Her fiancee, Heath Satterfield, told WSB TV, "I got to ask my best friend to marry me and that was, so far, the best day of my life." The couple were to be married on Sept. 22.

According to investigators, Carroll was driving her 2014 Ford Escape north on Mars Hill as a 2010 Toyota Corolla driven by 20-year-old Braden Price, of Hiram, was heading south. Police say Price lost control of the Toyota, crossed over the double yellow line into oncoming traffic, and struck Carroll head-on. Carroll died from her injuries at WellStar Kennestone Hospital, and a passenger in Price's car, Ashley Bratton, 17, of Acworth, also died from her injuries at the hospital. Price and a 16-year-old boy who also was a passenger in his car were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The couple were driving in separate cars to spend a few days with Satterfield's family in Dalton when the accident happened.

"For all who knew her, it’s no exaggeration to say she was the sweetest person they knew. She was light hearted, warm, and kind to everyone, and was especially loyal to her friends and family. She constantly sought out ways to serve and care for those around her," wrote friends on a GoFundMe page started in her memory.

The couple planned to live with Carroll’s parents in Marietta while Satterfield completed his graduate degree at Georgia State. Friends created the online fundraiser to help cover some of Satterfield’s expenses over the next year, including tuition, rent and counseling costs. As of July 27, about $8,000 had been donated toward the goal of $50,000.

In addition, the couple supported Simone’s Kids, a school and child sponsorship program in Uganda. Ten percent of all incoming financial gifts will be donated to that charity on behalf of Carroll.

Carroll's family will receive friends on Friday, July 27, from 4 to 7 p.m. at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory in Marietta. The funeral ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, at McEachern Memorial United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Kennesaw Memorial Park in Marietta.

She will lie in state from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the church.

Born in Atlanta, Allison lived in Powder Springs for most of her life. She graduated from Hillgrove High School in 2012, then graduated from the University of Georgia in 2016. She was about to receive her Master's Degree in Education from Georgia State University. Her passion was teaching and caring for her students, according to her obituary.

She currently taught 3rd grade at Dowell Elementary School, while also planning a wedding to be married to Heath Satterfield on September 22nd. Allison also had a heart for mission work and had traveled to California, Uganda, and other places in the mission field. She loved being with and spending time with close friends. She was a member of Burnt Hickory Church of Christ, and an honorary member of Varnell United Methodist Church, where Heath is a member.

Police say the speed that Price was driving at the time of the crash is believed to have contributed to it and charges are expected to be filed. Anyone with information in the crash is asked to contact Cobb County Police Department's traffic unit at 770-499-3987.
