📰 News we're reading

1. Setting her up for success (theoglethorpeecho.com) — In Oglethorpe County, sophomore setter Naomi McPeake is balancing a starring role on the state champion OCHS volleyball team with award-winning goat showing and demanding schoolwork. Supported by her family, she's logging long hours in the barn and gym, piling up records, state and national honors, and a spot on a national watch list while refusing to pick a single favorite passion.

2. Region play keeps hopes alive for football team (theoglethorpeecho.com) — Oglethorpe County football fans get a reality check but also a reason for optimism, as the young, injury-hit Patriots enter Region 8-AA play with a fresh offensive approach and key underclassmen stepping up. With a road game at Banks County looming after a bye week, coaches and players say consistency, ball security, and resilience could still turn this season around.

3. The sound of music: Students, Jones look to grow OCHS chorus (theoglethorpeecho.com) — Oglethorpe County students and director Lee Jones are working to grow the small OCHS chorus, which currently represents just a sliver of local music enrollment. With only about ten singers, they're pushing for a middle-school feeder program, more scheduling flexibility, and broader community support so more Oglethorpe teens can experience concerts, vocal training, and the confidence that comes with performing.

4. Chicken 'scratched' (hhjonline.com) — A proposed zoning variance for 72 large chicken houses in Dooly County has nearby residents worried about traffic, water use, odors, and environmental impacts, including 45,000 tons of feed hauled from the seed plant in Oglethorpe. After the applicant requested a delay, the planning commission pushed its decision to Nov. 9, giving locals more time to organize questions about transparency, setbacks, and how the project could affect small farmers.
