Georgia Dems Vote Down New Reapportionment Maps

Dems said the maps would create a "Republican super majority."

The reapportionment maps, which would divide Mableton in three state House districts, proposed by state Republicans last week have been voted down.

With state House Democrats voting unanimously, House representatives voted against the map 107 to 65. The outcome was the same in the state Senate, again with Senate Dems voting unanimously, with a vote of 35-18.

"Georgia Democrats voted in solidarity today against Republican-proposed reapportionment maps that would discriminate against the ability of Georgians to build multi-racial coalitions, reducing the number of white Democrats further isolates African Americans, Latinos and many other Georgia voters," according to a release from the state House and Senate Democratic caucuses.

Senate Democratic Reapportionment Chair Horacena Tate (D-Atlanta), who serves Mableton, said it was clear that the proposed maps were drawn in a way "to eliminate Democratic incumbents," according to the release.

Democrats said they had little say in the proposed maps and offered substitute maps.

"The purpose of our maps was to demonstrate there are other better choices on the table and that the ability of minority voters to elect the candidate of their choice does not have to be sacrificed," stated Tate in the release.
