Sky View Elementary Teacher OK After Hit-and-Run

Carrie Kane, a third grade teacher at Mableton’s , was hit by a car while riding her bicycle to work on Austell Road from her home in Northeast Cobb on Wednesday morning. Kane has worked at Sky View for the last five years.

The driver continued to drive away. Cobb Police are investigating the incident, which is the second South Cobb hit-and-run incident involving a cyclist in a week.

The hit-and-run that took place on Saturday was fatal. However, Kane was released on Wednesday afternoon from Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, according to a story from the MDJ. However, she will continue to see a neurologist and orthopaedic doctor.

Β Morgan Has Victory with Teacher Effectiveness Bill

On Monday, Rep. Alisha Morgan (D-Austell) had a legislative victory with an amended bill that would make a teacher’s performance over the last three years the primary factor when considering layoffs for teachers. Her initial House bill, HB 287, which was co-sponsored by House Majority Whip Ed Lindsey (R-Atlanta), did not make it to the floor. However, she was able to have amended language added to a similar bill, SB 184, which passed the House with a large majority (141-29) on Monday afternoon. Districts would also be prohibited from using years of service as the determining factor when reducing its workforce under the bill.

The bill, which was authored by Senate President Pro Tempore Tommie Williams (R- Lyons), returns to the Senate today so that changes made in the House can be agreed upon, and it will next move on to the governor for his signature.

Autistic South Cobb High Teen Found Safely After Mattie's Call

On Wednesday, a 14-year-old autistic teen, who is a student at , was found safely around 3:30 p.m. after a Mattie’s Call was issued. Jean Luc Presssoir had been missing since Tuesday. The teen called his mother from the South Cobb Regional Library, where he slept overnight, according to this story in the MDJ.
