Fire Hydrant Maintenance Starts Monday in Woodstock

Residents may notice temporary water discoloration during the scheduled maintenance.

The Woodstock Fire and Rescue Department on Monday will start performing fire hydrant maintenance throughout the city.

The initiative will start April 13 and will run through June 12. Woodstock residents may notice some temporary discoloration in the water, which will not harm residents; it could stain light-colored clothing, however.

The discoloration is the result of sediment that is always present in waterlines being “stirred up” during hydrant testing, the city notes.

As part of testing procedures, the fire department will flow each hydrant until the water is clear; however, smaller water lines that lead to each house may still have cloudy water. This condition may be remedied by flowing water from the tap until it is clear.

Fire hydrant maintenance is important in order to ensure the city has properly working hydrants, and the fiire department performs this maintenance each year.

The hydrants are painted, flowed and greased. This procedure is a component of the ISO, or Insurance Service Office, rating. Woodstock currently has a rating of 1, the highest rating possible.
