📰 News we're reading

1. Brown Water Advisory issued for Oahu following recent Lowell storm (kitv.com) — A brown water advisory remains in effect for Oahu, and Honolulu officials urge residents to avoid murky ocean and stream water because of debris and dangerous bacteria after Tropical Storm Lowell. Magic Island and nearby areas, including the Ala Wai and canoe launch, are showing especially high contamination levels. Health experts recommend staying out of affected waters for at least a week.

2. Magic Island parking lot reopens; lagoon, other lots remain closed (staradvertiser.com) — Access to Magic Island in Ala Moana Regional Park is partially restored for Honolulu residents, with the main parking lot now open while cleanup from Hurricane Lowell continues. The lagoon, several other parking lots, and some roadways remain closed due to sand and debris, and parks officials expect the lagoon to stay off-limits until at least Friday as crews finish restoration work.

3. UH women's soccer to play remaining 2026 home matches on campus (hawaiinewsnow.com) — If you follow UH women's soccer in Honolulu, all remaining 2026 home matches will now be played on the UH Lower Campus Field instead of returning to Waipiʻo this season. Starting October 7, four afternoon games, including Senior Day on November 1, will feature free admission, though standard campus parking fees still apply.

4. Young Brothers provides sailing schedule update : Big Island Now (bigislandnow.com) — Honolulu Harbor is under temporary restrictions after Hurricane Lowell, causing delays and schedule changes for Young Brothers barge sailings to several islands. If you ship or receive cargo through Honolulu, check new deadlines and rescheduled departures, especially for Nāwiliwili, Kawaihae, and Kaunakakai. Storm relief cargo is being prioritized, and some ports remain closed or limited until further notice.

5. Woman dies following critical hit-and-run crash in Waipahu (kitv.com) — A 54-year-old woman has died from injuries suffered in an August 30 hit-and-run on the H-1 near Waipahu, adding to Oahu's rising traffic death toll. Another crash in McCully on Bingham Street killed a 26-year-old woman and seriously injured a passenger. Honolulu officials continue investigating both incidents as they track this year's fatalities.
