Cubs' Javier Baez Could be Honored With a Chicago Street Sign

Alderman Roberto Maldonado proposed the idea at Tuesday's City Council meeting.

CHICAGO, IL — A city alderman thinks Cubs second baseman Javier Baez deserves a little more recognition. That's why he's proposing an honorary street sign for this year's National League Championship Series co-MVP.

Alderman Roberto Maldonado (26th Ward) introduced a measure at Tuesday's City Council meeting to name the west side of Luis Munoz Marin Drive, from Sacramento Avenue to Division Street, after Baez. That stretch of the street, which is named after Puerto Rico's first elected governor, runs by Humboldt Park's Little Cubs Field, a miniature re-creation of Wrigley Field.

Maldonado first brought up the proposal in a Facebook update Sunday:

The idea for an honorary street sign for Baez started with Maldonado's 11-year-old son, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Even though the alderman's family roots for the White Sox,he told the Chicago Tribune that they've been cheering for Baez and the Cubs in the World Series.

The street sign's proposed location and what it would represent to the residents in that area also motivated Maldonado's decision to introduce the ordinance. Like Maldonado, Baez is Puerto Rican, and Humboldt Park has large Puerto Rican presence.

Maldonado hasn't contacted Baez or the Cubs concerning the street, the Tribune reports. The ordinace now must be approved by the council before Baez can receive his sign.
