Teen Found Hours After Fatal Crash: Police

The 19-year-old from Carpentersville was killed in the collision Sunday night on Marengo Road.

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL – A teen killed in a single-vehicle crash near Huntley Sunday afternoon was not found for several hours after veering off the roadway, driving through a cornfield and colliding with a tree, authorities said Monday. The teen killed in the crash that happened in the 13400 block of Marengo Road has been identified as Lilith R. Okopski, 19, of Carpentersville, according to a news release from the McHenry Co. Coroner's Office. Friends of Okopski told Patch the teen goes by the name of Maxwell.

A preliminary investigation into the collision shows a 1997 Acura CL was headed southeast on Marengo Road when it left the roadway, according to a news release from the McHenry County Sheriff's Office.

The crash was reported at about 7:09 p.m. on Sunday but authorities believe it happened hours earlier during the morning on Sunday. The vehicle was concealed within the tree line and was hard to spot, authorities said.

Okopski was the only person in the vehicle and he was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later, according to the coroner's office. An autopsy is scheduled for this week.

Authorities do not know at this point why Okopski, the driver of the Acura, veered off roadway.

The crash remains under investigation by the Huntley Police Department, the McHenry County Accident Investigation Team and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
