500 Chicago Area Families Learned Importance of Disaster Safety

Vernon Hills Families, Including the Hicks Family, Came Out to the Field Museum for a Day of Learning and Fun.

This past Saturday at the Field Museum, Points of Light, Chicago Cares and The Allstate Foundation concluded their 14-city disaster preparation tour and education campaign. At this free event, volunteers helped a total of 500 Chicago families build free disaster kits to use in the event of a disaster or unforeseen emergency. Children and their parents learned about the importance of disaster preparation, how to create a household emergency plan and the essential components of a disaster kit – and they had fun doing it!

Families from all around Chicago came out to the Field Museum to learn more about disaster safety tips. While all families walked away with their very own disasters kits, that included items like hand-crank flashlights, emergency blankets and refillable water bottles, participants were encouraged to add to their bags when they got home. The goal was to use this activity as a jumping off point. Families can personalize their kits to their family’s individual needs.
