Bleeding Control for the Injured (B-Con)

Emergency Preparation

The District 128 Community Education Program is offering a class that you don’t want to miss. Bleeding Control for the Injured (B-Con) is the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians’ program to educate the general public on controlling life threatening bleeding. "In 2015, the Obama administration, with the support of the American College of Surgeons and other powerful medical groups, started Stop the Bleed, a national outreach and advocacy program which focuses on educating first responders and the general public on how to stop severe bleeding." San Diego Union-Tribune, October 3, 2017. Several national agencies have also endorsed and partnered with this training including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Fire Administration.

The goal of this course is to give students the knowledge and skill necessary to be confident in extreme emergency situations. This class is geared not only toward an active shooter event but would be useful for household type emergencies such as cutting your hand on broken glass. Through lecture and hands-on practical applications, students will learn to stop life-threatening bleeding with bandages and tourniquets. The class will also include active threat awareness training so you will know what to do - run, hide or fight during an incident and then what you can do after the incident is over so that you can help save lives until first responders can arrive. “It is through planning there is success. No one is responsible for your safety but you,” said Robb Briggs, instructor for class.

The class will take place on Monday, Nov. 13 from 7:00 - 9:30 pm at Libertyville High School. Tuition is $49 which includes all material fees. Discounts are available to D128 senior residents and all military personnel. Register by contacting the D128 Community Education office at (847) 247-4575 or online at www.comed128.org.
