Eighth graders at Hawthorn Middle School North participated in an energy fair after researching various sources currently used to generate electricity. The classes learned that despite the best conservation efforts this country continues to use more energy. Through in-depth research, students were surprised to learn that scientists are working to turn yesterday’s problems into bright solutions.
Students researched energy that is solar powered, comes from coal, petroleum, is wind powered, hydropowered, and nuclear powered.
One student said, “I enjoyed learning about future energy and the effects energy has on our planet.”

Added Science Teacher Douglas Shearer, “Our country needs to have a variety of energy sources in order to be energy dependent. Sources like solar and wind are growing in popularity. Yet, surprisingly nonrenewable fuels like coal and oil will continue to play a part in satisfying our country’s energy demand.”
Said Principal Robert Collins, “The project fostered creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking. In addition, it promoted global awareness.”
