In their first social entrepreneurship project Hawthorn Middle School students in Mike Sementa’s class raised $5,550 to help sick children hospitalized for cancer.
Students sold suckers along with hosting a Go Fund Me page as part of a Handing Hope project in which they devised a business plan to raise money to purchase suckers for cancer patients. The suckers are designed to lessen the effects the chemotherapy has on children’s taste buds. Their money will supply 30,000 children with suckers.
During the process student Steven Hart asked the million-dollar question of “Who would spend $1 on a sucker?” He soon realized that it wasn’t about the price of the candy but it was about the cause the funds were going to help.
