Grief and Substance Abuse
Knowing the warning signs of substance abuse will help you know if a grieving person is on that slippery slope.

Grief is most often associated with the death of a loved one. But it is actually the emotional reaction to any major loss such as a divorce, relationship break-up, or job loss.
While no two people will grieve in the same way, almost everyone who experiences a major loss goes through a range of emotions such as anger, frustration, guilt, sadness and depression. And these feelings can take a serious toll on even the most resilient individuals.
Needless to say, dealing with grief in a healthy manner is the best way to be able to work through it and move on from the trauma. Spending time with family and friends, exercising, yoga and meditation, talking with a therapist or joining a support group can all be beneficial for someone grieving.

Unfortunately, many people turn to drugs and alcohol as a way to cope during this difficult time. They may use these substances to disassociate with their feelings, numb the pain of the emotions, or even punish themselves for their loss. A person who has a history of anxiety, depression, and previous addiction or lack of social support is more prone to turn to drugs or alcohol during this difficult time.
Knowing the warning signs of substance abuse will help you know if a grieving person is on that slippery slope. Here are some things to look for according to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Addiction:
