New Trier Remembers 4 Who Died in Boating Accident

One of the young men tragically killed last weekend recently donated a piece of artwork to the school's Art Department.

WINNETKA, IL - The New Trier High School community is as tight knit as they come. Once a Trevian, always a Trevian.

So it does not come as a surprise to see the outpouring of support shown toward the families of the four young men tragically killed following a boating accident on an icy Wisconsin lake last weekend.

On Friday, the school remembered each of the three victims who have been identified, all of which had attended New Trier for at least part of their high school life.

“Each of these young men made his own mark at New Trier, connecting in widely varying ways to friends, to teachers, and to the school community,” said Dr. Linda Yonke, Superintendent of New Trier Township High School District 203.

Mori Weinstein was a 2012 New Trier graduate who “loved art, taking classes including AP Art and Advanced Glass Art,” according to an official school statement.

“Though he had been out of high school for more than three years, Mori returned recently to donate a piece of his artwork to the Art Department at New Trier.”

Lanny Patrick Sack was a 2013 graduate who played baseball for the Trevians. He was described by the school as “a dedicated friend who loved to play baseball, sharing that love with others by coaching youth baseball while in high school.”

“He was well-liked in his adviser room and put his heart into school service projects.”

Christopher McQuillen spent his freshman and sophomore years at New Trier before transferring to another school. His adviser remembers “a light-hearted young man who was well-liked by his peers.”

Patrick Wetzel also attended the school for two years before graduating at a school in Washington, D.C. after his family moved there. As a former New Trier Lacrosse player, Wetzel stayed close to his friends in Winnetka after the move.

“While all of these men left New Trier High School a number of years ago, the New Trier community deeply feels their loss. New Trier advisers, teachers, administrators, parents, board members, students, and fellow alumni all are profoundly saddened by their deaths, and wish to express our support for their families and friends.”
