Sea Glass Festival Coming To MD + Celebrate Holidays On Chesapeake Bay

A sea glass festival is coming to a coastal Maryland town. Plus, residents can also celebrate holidays on the bay with these festivities.

MARYLAND — Marylanders can attend a sea glass festival, embrace the holidays with these bay-friendly festivities and celebrate National Native American Heritage Month with these events.

"Sea Glass & Coastal Arts Festival

Get a head start on your holiday shopping and enjoy some fabulous art, food, and fun at the fall edition of the Eastern Shore Sea Glass and Coastal Arts Festival in St. Michaels. The festival features artisans and craftspeople who will exhibit and sell coastal and [sea glass]-related jewelry, home décor, art and more. An emphasis will be placed on festive arts and crafts heading into the holiday season. Each two-day festival ticket includes entrance to the festival, live music and all the exhibitions and historic structures on the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum campus. A [sea glass] expert will be available both days for shard identification. Food and beverages will also be available for purchase. Nov. 19-20, Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, St. Michaels, MD. "Oyster Recipes For A Bay-Friendly Thanksgiving

It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving on the Chesapeake Bay without including our favorite bivalve. Oyster stuffing, is, of course, de rigueur, so here’s a recipe from the Maryland DNR and another from the Oyster Recovery Partnership. Or, how about an Oyster Rockefeller casserole? The Maryland DNR’s online Wild Maryland Cookbook has more oyster recipes, like baked Maryland oysters on the half shell and oyster-avocado toasts, as well as recipes for other Bay seafood and game."

These holiday greens workshops fill up so fast, so here’s a little advanced notice so you won’t miss out. Pickering Creek Audubon is offering this opportunity to spruce up your home with wreaths and ornaments made from pine cones, holly leaves and other natural treasures. [You will make these crafts while] sipping hot cocoa and enjoying the warm fire pit. Plus, you’re also invited to take a short guided hike around the Center’s winter woods. $10 per person. "Winter Waterfowl Walks at Eastern Neck

Winter is coming to the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, and that means it’s wintering waterfowl season. One of the best places on the Chesapeake to observe these winter visitors is the Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge is an island of 2,285 acres located at the confluence of the Chester River and the Chesapeake Bay in Kent County, Maryland. The Refuge is designated as a Global Important Bird Area by the Audubon Society for the tundra swan. 35,000 waterfowl of other species also winter here, including Canada goose, scaup, canvasback, ruddy duck, mallard and black duck. The winter walk schedule for the Refuge has just been announced and begins December 3. A local birding expert or naturalist will guide each of the two-mile walks. The walks are free, but online registration is required."

"Baltimore American Indian Center Pow Wow

Join the Baltimore American Indian Center for a day to celebrate good food, culture, heritage, authentic Indigenous crafts and fun. There will be native food vendors, a hand drum contest and dancing presentations from the Lumbee, Lakota, Tuscarora, Lenope, Nanticoke and Piscataway Tribes. The event will be held indoors at the Maryland State Fair Grounds. $10 adults, $5 youth (4-12), free for 3 years and under. Nov. 19, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Maryland State Fair Ground’s 4-H/Home Arts Building (handicap accessible), Timonium, MD. More information and tickets"

"Online Native Cinema Showcase

November is National American Indian Heritage Month. The National Museum of the American Indian’s Native Cinema Showcase, available to watch online, is an annual celebration of the best in Indigenous film. “Embracing their communities’ oral histories, knowledge and ancestral lands, Indigenous filmmakers are seeking guidance from the past and envisioning new paths for the future.” The online program includes a total of 35 films representing 30 Native nations in eight different countries. Genres include documentaries, music videos, kid-friendly shorts, films in Indigenous languages and more. Available on demand from Nov. 18-25, 2022. Watch now!"
