County Liquor Store Reopens After Employee Contracts Coronavirus

More than two weeks after an employee tested positive for coronavirus, Hampden Lane Liquor & Wine in Bethesda is back in business.

BETHESDA, MD — Hampden Lane Liquor & Wine has reopened more than two weeks after a Montgomery County employee tested positive for the new coronavirus, according to officials.

The store, located at 4920 Hampden Lane, closed its doors after the Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) worker was sent home on March 25 and subsequently tested positive for the virus. During that time, crews performed a deep-clean of the store, officials said.

"We've thoroughly cleaned the Hampden store and have asked all our staff who have come into contact with the employee to voluntarily self-quarantine for two weeks," said ABS Retail Chief Kent Massie. "Thankfully, no other employees have shown symptoms after the two-week period and have returned to reopen the store."

All ABS stores now have plexiglass at each register to create a barrier between customers and staff, according to county officials. Hand sanitizer stations are located at the entrance.

In addition, ABS has posted signs reminding customers to wear cloth face coverings and practice social distancing while shopping.

Employees are limiting the number of people who can shop at one time to ensure social distancing requirements are met.

Due to staffing shortages, and to limit exposure, ABC stores are operating on a single shift from noon to 7 p.m. Stores are closed on Sundays.
