Maryland Women’s Business Center Receives “Making A Difference” Award

The Maryland Women’s Business Center (MWBC) and Rockville Economic Development, Inc. (REDI) has been selected as the 2014 recipient of Nonprofit Village’s Small Nonprofit “Making A Difference Award.”  Nonprofit Village’s Executive Director, Kim Jones, made the formal announcement in February.  Their Annual Awards Breakfast is scheduled for Thursday, May 1, 2014 at the Marriott Bethesda Pooks Hill.

 

The Awards Breakfast will feature Keynote Speaker Carol Thompson Cole, President & CEO of Venture Philanthropy Partners.  Cokie Roberts will serve as Emcee and Catherine Leggett is an Honorary Chair.  Sponsors of this year’s event include the Clark Charitable Foundation, The JBG Companies, Pepco, Chevy Chase Land Co. and Montgomery College.

“We are honored to be recognized by the Nonprofit Village for our work to help a diverse population of women start and grow businesses in our community.  We are also grateful for the support we receive from our sponsors and volunteers which enables us to help more than 1,000 entrepreneurs per year achieve economic independence as a business owner,” said Lori Gillen, Managing Director of the Maryland Women’s Business Center.

The Nonprofit Village is part of a national network of nonprofits enhanced by sharing space and support services.  Currently, they house 20 diverse nonprofits and virtual tenants that collectively serve more than 66,000 residents of Montgomery County.  The Nonprofit Village is committed to strengthening the capacity and effectiveness of the nonprofit sector through engagement, shared services and affordable work solutions including physical and virtual offices so that nonprofits can successfully achieve their missions and “make a difference.“

 

These awards are designed to celebrate an individual, a small and large nonprofit and a business whose standard of excellence helps to build and sustain a vibrant, community-serving nonprofit sector. The Nonprofit Village achieves its mission by providing affordable office space, shared business services and a variety of educational solutions to its nonprofit tenant members and the extended sector.

 

In addition to MWBC/REDI, the Nonprofit Village 2014 “Making a Difference” Awards recipients include Dr. Usa Bunnag (Individual), Bethesda Magazine (Business) and Adventure Theatre (Large Nonprofit).
