Sinkhole Forces Closure Of 2 Lanes, Shoulder Of Southbound I-270 In Montgomery County

Two lanes and the righthand shoulder off southbound I-270 in Montgomery County were closed to traffic Thursday morning due to sinkhole.

Southbound traffic was backed up around 7:30 a.m., on Thursday, on I-270 north of Exit 9 of I-370. The two righthand lanes and shoulder are closed to traffic so that work crews can repair a sinkhole in the right lane.

ROCKVILLE, MD — Commuters traveling southbound on I-270 in Montgomery County on Thursday morning will encounter delays as State Highway Administration work to repair a sinkhole in the roadway, according to a release from the Maryland State Police.

Police reported around 9 p.m., on Wednesday a large sinkhole had appeared in the righthand lane of I-270 southbound, leading up to Exit 9 of I-370. Police say the sinkhole was caused by broken 6-foot drainage pipe.

As of 7:30 a.m., the two righthand lands and shoulder of southbound I-270 are closed to traffic. SHA told police that repairs could take up to 24 hours.
