Michael Phelps Finishes 2016 Olympics with One More Gold

Phelps picked up his last gold medal of the Olympic games in Rio Saturday night after a medley relay with Team USA.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL — Most decorated Olympian of all time Michael Phelps swam what he said was his final race in the Olympic games Saturday night, laying claim to his 23rd gold medal and 28th overall.

On Monday morning, Phelps appeared on the Today show in Rio, where he said he was positive 2016 would be his final Olympics.

"I was so much more emotional during these games," he said: "...because I knew this was the last time."

In his last race, Phelps swam the third leg of the men's 4x100-meter medley relay. Team USA won the event with a time of 3:27.95. Placing second was Great Britain with 3:29.24 and third was Australia with 3:29.93.

Swimmers Ryan Murphy, Cody Miller and Nathan Adrian rounded out the men's relay team with Phelps. Murphy broke a world record for the event in the backstroke, finishing in 51.85 seconds, according to Team USA. After Miller finished his leg of breaststroke, Phelps raced ahead of the competition in the butterfly, so that Adrian could close out the night with a gold for the team.

It was the ninth consecutive win for the United States in the 4x100-meter medley, according to Team USA, which reported that Phelps officially announced his retirement afterward, with chants of "Michael Phelps" coming from the stands.

Phelps said plans now include dedicating himself to family and travel. In addition, Phelps said he plans to continue teaching people to swim so that the drowning rate improves. "That's a big goal of mine," Phelps said.
