2 Drownings, 1 Fatal Shooting On Tragic Fourth Of July

A 13-year-old boy was among those lost on the holiday.

The Fourth of July is a time for celebration, but for three communities are in mourning Thursday. Three people died - two in drownings and one in a shooting - on Wednesday. One of the victims who drowned was just 13.

Police said they arrived at Bell Pond in Worcester last night to find people frantically searching the water for the missing boy. A scuba team found him in about 12 feet of water approximately 69 feet off-shore. Police said he had been under water for about 15 minutes. The boy began breathing again at the hospital, but was pronounced dead early Thursday morning.

In Saugus, a 20-year-old was swimming with his two cousins to an island on Silver Lake at Breakheart Reservation. The man began to struggle halfway there and went under. Responders recovered his body in the early evening.
