Residents Displaced After Somerville House Fire

The flames broke out at a multi-unit home on Monday afternoon.

SOMERVILLE, MA — Five residents are now displaced in the aftermath of a house fire that took place at 61 Puritan Road on Monday, according to the Somerville Fire Department.

Crew responded to the two-alarm blaze at approximately 5 p.m. to find heavy smoke and flames emanating from a porch on one of the upper floors.

The fire spread from a porch to the exterior of the home and into all levels of the home resulting in significant fire, smoke, and water damage,” the department said in a statement. “The heat from the fire also melted the exterior siding of the home next door at 59 Puritan Road.”

No one was at the residence when the blaze broke out. Three firefighters suffered what has been described as minor injuries, and were able to remain on scene and assist with the extinguishing efforts. The Medford Fire Department provided mutual aid at the home, while the Cambridge, Arlington, Everett, and Boston departments provided station coverage for Somerville.

Somerville Public Information Officer Victoria MacGregor told Patch that the city and American Red Cross are working together to assist the displaced residents. The cause of the fire is now under investigation.
