The scenic train was carrying 355 passengers, many of them families with young children. No one on board was injured.

WAREHAM, MA – Officials on Monday identified the people fatally struck by a Christmas-themed train Saturday night as 33-year-old Melissa Gaudette and 36-year-old Edwin Benitez-Figueroa, both of Wareham. Family members said they were married with three children.

Investigators told Gaudette's father the couple was on the tracks when they were hit, according to the Boston Globe. The conductor tried multiple times to stop the train and activated its emergency brakes prior to the collision, according to the Plymouth District Attorney's office.

The train, which was full of first responders and their families, struck the couple around 7:30 p.m. Saturday night. It had left Buzzards Bay about 30 minutes prior carrying 355 passengers.
