Malden School Committee Member Relinquishes Leadership Role

Jennifer Spadafora will now become a regular member of the committee.

MALDEN, MA — A School Committee member is stepping down from her leadership position within the board.

Ward 3 Member Jennifer Spadafora announced on Thursday, March 5 that she would no longer serve as the Vice Chair of the Committee after several terms in the role dating back more than four years. She was most recently re-appointed to the position in January by her peers after being re-elected by Malden residents to her fifth consecutive term on the Committee.

“Serving in this role has been a true honor, and I am proud of the progress we have made together to support our students, schools, and community,” Spadafora said in her announcement. “I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the families, friends, staff, and community partners who have supported me in this role… This decision was not made lightly, as I remain deeply committed to the mission of the Committee and the success of all our students.”

Spadafora added that she will be involved in the process of identifying her successor. She was first elected to the School Committee in 2017, following former Ward 3 representative Michael Schiess. She has been a driving force behind the appointment of two Superintendents of Schools in the past five years, including current Superintendent Dr. Timothy Sippel. She is also the Chair of the School Committee’s Negotiations Subcommittee, which handles contracts and compensation for district employees.

“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the families, friends, staff, and community partners who have supported me in this role,’ Spadafora said.
