Malden And Medford Receive Federal Funding Help For Crucial Projects
The funds were secured through an initiative by Democratic Minority WHIP Katherine Clark.
MALDEN, MA — The city has received more than $800,000 in federal funds in order to make an important construction improvement to the public school district.
The $850,000 will be used to replace facility roofs and address urgent water leakage issues at numerous school buildings in Malden.
Democratic Minority WHIP Katherine Clark has been named the driving force behind securing the funds for Malden as well as other communities across the state’s Fifth Congressional District. Mayor Gary Christenson said the city has been struggling to find the finances and resources it needs to make the critical repairs.

“Her (Clark’s) leadership in securing a federal earmark of $850,000 will go a long way toward preserving the integrity of our school buildings,” Christenson said. “It is an investment that reinforces our shared commitment to providing a safe and secure learning environment for our students.”
The neighboring city of Medford also received $250,000 as part of Clark’s initiative, which will reportedly go toward the construction of a new community center for residents of the Willis Avenue Housing Development and the other surrounding community.

The funding secured by Clark will also be used for projects in the nearby communities of Melrose and Arlington. Arlington received more than $1 million to be used in stormwater pollution reduction efforts in the Mystic River and its 76-mile watershed.
“I am proud to bring home critical investments that will construct welcoming and safe community gathering spaces, build affordable and accessible housing for seniors, advance our march toward a climate resilient future, strengthen our infrastructure, and so much more,” Clark said in a statement. “Thank you to the state and local leaders who partnered with me to identify these priorities. Together, we are building a future more worthy of our children.”
