Coyotes In Medford? Actually, Yes.

It's really not all that rare or concerning, officials say. Attend an informational meeting tonight meant to educate residents.

MEDFORD, MA – Coyotes in Medford? Actually, yes, but it's not all that surprising. You might not see one walking into City Hall every day, but there's been enough to warrant an informational meeting on "Living With Coyotes." (We can't always promise coyotes, but subscribe to Medford Patch or like us on Facebook to keep on all things local.)

The educational presentation, set for Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. at the council chambers, will feature Belmont Animal Control Officer and representative of Project Coyote John Marguranis. It will emphasize ways to deter or discourage coyote activity while also shedding light on myths and facts about coyotes. Residents will learn about human and pet safety while sharing a community with coyotes.

"Coyotes generally keep the same size territory and since they've been here for a long time their numbers are stable," Medford Animal Control Officer Patrick Hogan told Patch. "There is nothing unusual about the number of coyotes in Medford. They're in every city and town in the Commonwealth."

Hogan went on to say there have been no incidents or an increase in sightings, but that "we don get a lot of them" and it's just time to hold an informational meeting. Hogan said there have been recent sighting in "literally every part of the city," but said that it isn't anything new or particularly concerning.

In September, Arlington Police said a coyote killed a family dog.
