Demolition Of Longtime Medford Restaurant Delayed

The historical commission voted unanimously to "preferably preserve" the Main Street building, which houses two other businesses.

MEDFORD, MA – Bocelli's has a new lease on life, at least for another year and a half. The historical commission voted 5-0 Monday to "preferably preserve" 368-374 Main St., which houses two other businesses in addition to the longtime Medford restaurant, according to the Medford Transcript.

Developer Rich Welch of Mesiti Group is looking to tear down the building to build a mixed-use development. The application he submitted to the historical commission called for replacing Bocelli's, Jason Anthony's Formal Wear and Backstreet Salon with 12 apartments and new retailers on the ground floor.

The commission's decision Monday stays demolition of the building for at least 18 months. Welch may also come to an agreement with the commission to preserve historic parts of the building or include them in his redevelopment proposal, the Transcript reported.
