MA High Schooler's Senior Quote On Race Takes Off

Betshina Bernier says her quote, which some felt was racist, was intended to point out racial tensions at her high school.

REVERE, MA – A Massachusetts high schooler set out to make a statement with her yearbook quote. It has since taken off after she tweeted it out, still shocked it made the cut.

"Anything is possible when you sound caucasian on the phone," it says under Revere High School senior Betshina Bernier's senior portrait. Her tweet has been liked over 355,000 times and retweeted more than 85,000 times as of Friday morning.

Bernier told the Boston Globe she wanted to point out the racial tensions she says she's seen at her school. Administrators also took note of the quote, with Revere Superintendent Dianne Kelly telling the Globe it's "clear we have some work to do in that area."

Not everyone thought the quote was appropriate. Two parents and one student told administrators they "felt it was a racist comment," according to Kelly, and Bernier says she's gotten some pushback from classmates.

Administrators spoke to Bernier this week to assure her she can come to them for support and to remind her of the permanency of social media outlets like Twitter and Instagram.
