Medford Coffee Shop Suffers Sudden Closure

The original owners expected its next steward to keep the store open.

MEDFORD, MA — A coffee shop has closed its doors after a three-year run in West Medford.

Lola’s Coffee and More’s last day of business was on Sunday, April 5. Owners Len and Pearl Brault cited certain challenges that led them to retire earlier than they originally planned. The couple said they had made arrangements for the business to remain open, however that changed when its new ownership made a significant decision.

“Regrettably, after completing the necessary paperwork, the individual set to assume control of Lola's Coffee and More informed us that they would not be proceeding, forcing our hand and leading to this sudden closure,” the couple said in a statement.

The business first opened on 17 Playstead Road near the West Medford MBTA commuter rail station in the spring of 2023. However, Len Brault’s history in the coffee industry dates back far further. Len’s Coffee LLC launched in 2005 as a coffee importation and roasting business with its own brick and mortar location at 9 Jerome St. after Len Brault first operated out of his own home. Len’s Coffee specialized in French and Vietnamese blends of the drink.

“For hundreds of years, the world has enjoyed four fundamentally different species of coffees: Arabica, Robusta, Excelsa and Liberica, and we have them all here,” Len Brault said about his business. “Our search for the unusual and better began in Vietnam, and our top-selling coffees are still our Vietnamese brands, including Trung Nguyen.”

In addition to coffee, Lola’s Coffee and More offered Filipino-inspired pastries and cookies, which Pearl Brault brought to the business through her heritage.

Despite the closure of Lola's, Len's Coffee still remains in business at its physical location and online. Len and Pearl Brault expressed gratitude to the Medford community for the “three incredible years” that Lola’s was in business.
