Registration Open For Run Medford Race Weekend

The city and Dave McGillivray Finish Strong Foundation will host races in September.

MEDFORD, MA — Registration is now open for the annual Run Medford Road Race on Friday, Sept. 25 and Saturday, Sept. 26, according to an announcement from Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn. The event is hosted by the City of Medford and the Dave McGillivray Finish Strong Foundation. Events are scheduled for the Hormel Stadium track on Friday and at City Hall on Saturday, respectively.

Run Medford includes Jerry’s Run for all Ages 5K Race and 10K Start. The race is named after Jerry Panarese, a member of the New England 65+ Runners Club who served as director of the Run of All Ages for 25 years. The weekend also includes a kids’ fun run, high school mile, celebrity mile, para mile and other events. As part of the event’s community giving effort, donations will be made to every Medford Public School Parent Teacher Organization.

“Now in its fifth year, our annual Run Medford event continues to grow and attract runners and families from all over,” Lungo-Koehn said. “The success of this event is a huge credit to our community and local partners that show up year after year. We are looking forward to another great weekend of physical activity and fun.”

The announcement also highlighted McGillivray’s ties to Medford. He graduated from Medford High School in 1972 as class valedictorian. In 1978, he ran from Medford, Oregon to Medford, Massachusetts in support of the Jimmy Fund, whose community-based fundraising events directly benefit the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

“The Finish Strong Foundation is thrilled to be partnering with the City of Medford once again to give back to the place where my running journey began,” Dave McGillivray said. "This is looking like our best year yet – with some exciting new updates like the 10K start!”

McGillivray later founded the Dave McGillivray Running and Sports Center in Medford before transitioning to his event management business, Dave McGillivray Sports Enterprises, according to the announcement. The Finish Strong Foundation says it works to inspire and empower youth across New England and beyond to increase physical activity, expand literacy and build community and self-esteem through running, reading and acts of kindness.

DMSE Sports is described in the announcement as a full-service event management organization that supports races and events of different sizes. The firm has produced more than 1,000 events since 1981 and handles the technical and logistical aspects of more than 30 races and walks each year, according to the announcement.
