Medford MCAS 2017 Scores

See how students at Medford High and Medford Vocational Technical High did, as well as students from grades 3-8 across the city.

This year's MCAS procedure is confusing at best. To read up on all the changes, click here.

In short, a "new" MCAS test was administered to public school students in grades 3-8. Among the changes are a new scoring system that says whether students were exceeding, meeting, partially meeting, or not meeting expectations.

The "old" MCAS was taken by 10th grade students. The scoring system graded students as advanced, proficient, needs improvement, or warning/failing.

The subjects were math, English, and science. The science portion was only administered to students in grades 5, 8, and 10.

For Medford, you can see how students in grades 3-8 in the Christopher Columbus, Brooks, McGlynn, and Milton Fuller Roberts schools fared by searching The Boston Globe's database here. Click what grade and subject you want, and type "Medford" into the search bar.

The 10th grade numbers are a bit easier to digest for Medford High and Medford Vocational Tech. There was a bit of a dip across the board, particularly in science.

Here are the percentage of students among Medford High 10th graders who scored advanced, proficient, needs improvement, and warning/failing.

  • In math, there were 57 advanced, 25 proficient, 12 needs improvement, and 6 warning/failing. When compared to last year's numbers, that is a 3 percent spike in the number of students who need improvement. Two percent of that spike came from the proficient range.
  • In English, there were 61 advanced, 32 proficient, 5 needs improvement, and 2 warning/failing. That is a 2 percent dip in students who scored advanced last year.
  • In science, there were 27 advanced, 46 proficient, 21 needs improvement, and 6 warning/failing. That is a five percent increase in the students who scored in either needing improvement or warning/failing.

Here are the percentage of students among Tech 10th graders who scored advanced, proficient, needs improvement, and warning/failing. There was vast improvement in English, but a continued struggle in science.

  • In math, there were 22 advanced, 43 proficient, 26 needs improvement, and 9 warning/failing. Compared to last year's numbers, that is a four percent dip in the amount of students who scored warning/failing, and represents a 2 percent increase in advanced and needs improvement.
  • In English, there were 17 advanced, 72 proficient, 11 needs improvement, and 0 warning/failing. That is a 6 percent dip in students who needed improvement, numbers that instead went to advanced and proficient.
  • In science, there were 0 advanced, 41 proficient, 54 needs improvement, and 6 warning/failing. That is a 3 percent dip in students who were advanced, though 2 percent of those numbers didn't fall below proficient.
