Medford Officials: National Grid Callers 'Possible Scam'

Office of Energy and Environment has received reports of callers, door-to-door salespeople and letters claiming to be from National Grid.

MEDFORD, MA – A sales push from representatives claiming to be from National Grid is a "possible scam," Medford officials said. The city's Office of Energy and Environment has received reports of callers claiming to be from National Grid contacting residents, as well as door-to-door salespeople and mailed letters from the company. Officials said National Grid does not call customers to offer discounts.

Medford is currently looking to hire a consultant to develop a "municipal aggregation" program, which would allow the city to negotiate electric costs on behalf of its residents by buying in bulk. It is expected to be available in fall or winter 2018.

In the meantime, residents are advised to carefully review offers from suppliers and never provide personal information over the phone.

Officials also offered the following tips to save energy and money:

  • If not done in the last two years, schedule a no-cost MassSave home energy assessment by calling -1- 866-527- 7283.
  • Turn down the thermostat at night and when no one is home. Installing a programmable or wireless thermostat makes it easy to create a schedule that is automatic.
  • If you’re having trouble paying your winter heating bills, contact the local ABCD office 781-322- 6284 to see if you’re eligible for heating fuel assistance. Homeowners who heat with oil, gas, or electric are all eligible to apply.
