Medford Launching City Beautification Initiatives For Spring 2026
City leaders are calling on residents to participate in a suite of programs designed to improve local green spaces and drainage systems.
MEDFORD, MA — The city is inviting residents to participate in a variety of volunteer opportunities this spring aimed at maintaining public resources and enhancing local green spaces. These programs include the annual Citywide Cleanup, Invasive Plant Walks, as well as several adoption initiatives for trees, drains, and public sites.
"Helping to keep the city clean, vibrant and thriving truly takes a community effort," Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn said. I want to sincerely thank all those who are already participating in these programs and encourage all others to join in giving back to the environment."
The annual Citywide Cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at various locations throughout the city. Organizers are currently seeking volunteers to assist with picking up trash and debris in neighborhoods and parks. Ambassadors who lead these locations will receive a complimentary shirt. Residents interested in participating can sign up online through the city website. The city is also continuing its Invasive Plant Walks program to help residents identify and remove non-native vegetation. These educational walks are led by Dan Bender of Wilderscaping LLC and Kim DeAndrade from the Mystic Charles Pollinator Pathways Group. Information regarding the schedule for these events can be found on the city events calendar. In addition to cleanup efforts, the city maintains infrastructure programs like Adopt-a-Drain to assist with flood mitigation. Participants in this program monitor storm drains to ensure they remain clear of debris, which allows water to flow freely during heavy rain or snow melt. The city also manages the Adopt-a-Site program to beautify public traffic islands and green spaces. This initiative allows businesses and individuals to sponsor specific locations where promotional signage will be displayed to recognize their contributions. The Forestry Department is seeking volunteers to adopt a tree for the program to support the growth of the city tree canopy. This commitment involves watering new trees from May through October and keeping the surrounding areas free of weeds.
