MEDFORD, MA — The city unveiled its second "three-dimensional" crosswalk Monday morning, this time outside of the Roberts Elementary School. The crosswalk, an optical illusion painted to look like floating blocks in the middle of the road, was first painted outside the Brooks Elementary School over April break.

Officials said similar designs have been effective in lowering speeds in other cities. The idea was first proposed by Isa and Eric, two students at Brooks Elementary School, who spoke before the Traffic Commission last year.

The city commissioned local artist Nate Swain to paint the crosswalks, which will be installed at the remaining two elementary schools. Swain told the Boston Globe in April he'd been "dying" to paint one after seeing pictures of traffic calming illusions.
