Wellington MBTA Yard Expanding In Medford
Renovations and upgrades are expected to take three years to complete.

MEDFORD, MA – The MBTA is currently expanding the Wellington train yard and maintenance facility in Medford. The work is necessary to accommodate an entire new fleet, the agency said Wednesday.
This will include adding a new bay, a second car-hoist, an electronics room, better staff facilities and more upgrades to the maintenance facility, as well as replacing the roof.
Finally, we’ve started a renovation and upgrade of the maintenance facility. We’re replacing the roof and adding many new services inside: a new bay, a second car-hoist, an electronics room, better staff facilities, and more. pic.twitter.com/JQ37Wsohe9

The MBTA also built a test track for the new trains, which became operational in March of this year. The agency said the track allows it to commission new vehicles at over twice the previous rate.

It is also adding six new tracks to the yard to accommodate storage for the current 120-car fleet and the new fleet of 152 cars. Construction on the tracks is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
We then began adding 6 new tracks to the yard. This is to increase storage capacity—we need a place to house the current fleet of 120 cars *and* the new fleet of 152 cars, before the old ones are retired. This is in progress and is expected to be complete by the end of 2018. pic.twitter.com/4VrZSGkGu0
