Whiz Kid Trent Sullivan Isn't What You'd Expect

Trent Sullivan is comfortable with dichotomy.

Meet Trent Sullivan.  He's a 16 year-old sophomore at Medford High School.  He's passionate about politics and his favorite subjects are History and English.  He labels himself as "kinda conservative."

So it's a little surprising that he had the scene-stealing role of Edna, the main character's mother, in Hairspray.  This role had Trent in drag.  Floral-housedress-and-hairnet drag.

Not so conservative, that.  But Trent likes to challenge perceptions.  What does a "kinda conservative" kid do in a realm known for its liberality?

"You have to hold your own," Trent says.  "Sometimes it's tough.  I try to keep the politics out of drama."

His goal is to master his part, and he's willing to do whatever the performance needs him to do.

He says, "I like taking chances and doing new things."

Trent also recognizes that he sees things through different lenses than his teachers, especially in History class.  How does he handle himself there?  With respect, and without compromise.

"I make my opinions known.  I challenge them," he said.  But he tries to do it in an engaging and respectful way.

Is he concerned that "Edna" will be what his classmates remember about him?  Not really.  He's pretty confident of himself: "They know who I am.  I'm ready to take criticism."  Which he'll handle with aplomb, no doubt.
