Alleged Cocaine Trafficker Arrested In Somerville

Police charged the man after pulling him over for texting while driving.

SOMERVILLE, MA – A Jamaica Plain man was arrested and charged with cocaine trafficking after being pulled over for texting while driving, police said. Steven Guevara, 27, was stopped around 10:40 p.m. on July 6 at the intersection of Mt. Vernon and Perkins streets.

According to the police report, officers could smell a "moderate" odor of unburnt marijuana coming from inside Guevara's car. He was allegedly holding one phone and had a second cell phone on the center console next to a small stack of cash. He told police he was using the phone's GPS so he could get to a friend's house.

Officers determined Guevara had a suspended license and asked him to sit on the sidewalk next to the car. He told police he only had a dime bag of marijuana in the center console of the car, according to the report.

Police began inventorying Guevara's car after they determined his brother would not be able to pick it up in time. Inside they found a black Beats by Dre pouch with several plastic bags, a digital scale and a large bag of powder that later tested positive for cocaine, the report stated.

Guevara told police he was on his way to visit a friend on Crescent Street but did not know his last name. He was placed into custody, and two more bags of cocaine were found in his groin area, according to police.
