School Closures, Parking Ban As Blizzard Hits Somerville
Parts of Middlesex County have seen more than 15 inches of snow.
SOMERVILLE, MA — A major blizzard is hitting Massachusetts, and many communities in are dealing with well over one foot of snow.
Parts of Middlesex County have seen more than 15 inches of snow, as of 1 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. A state of emergency remains in effect across the state, and Somerville took precautions ahead of the storm, including closing schools and non-essential town offices.
Somerville closed all municipal buildings and public schools for Monday, Feb. 23. In addition, the city is asking residents to stay off the roads and avoid on-street parking as part of a Parking Ban that went into effect on Sunday at 4 p.m. and will remain in effect until further notice. All vehicles parked in violation could be ticketed or towed while the ban is taking place. Cars must be moved to the odd side of the street.

"All cars must be removed from City lots within 2 hours of the end of the emergency," the city said in a statement. "Snow emergencies can be lifted at any time. Parking is not allowed in school lots during snow emergencies."
Other closures include all libraries and the Ginny Smithers Pool at 5 Cherry St. The Overnight Warming Center on 42 Prescott St. will remain open. Trash and recycling collection was also cancelled for Monday and will be delayed by one day for the rest of the week for all residents.
