Somerville Honoring Black History Month With Multiple Events
The events are organized by the city's Department of Racial and Social Justice.
SOMERVILLE, MA — The city has announced its full lineup of free public events scheduled for Black History Month. The month-long list of celebrations was spearheaded by Somerville’s Department of Racial and Social Justice.
The first of the four main scheduled events is a “wellness workshop” led by Monia Fernandez of Monarch Wellness that will take place on Thursday, Feb. 12 at the Tufts Administration Building Atrium on 167 Holland St. Limited to 15 participants, the workshop will teach practices of mental, physical, and emotional health. Monarch Wellness is headquartered at 11 Bow St. and identifies as a black-owned, woman-owned, and LGBTQ+ business. It offers care for people with chronic physical pain as well as mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression. The studio first opened at Assembly Row in 2021 before moving to its current home in Union Square.
The festivities will pick back up six days later on Wednesday, Feb.18 with a lesson on the history of civil rights as well as the current state of the movement. This event will also be held on Tufts University’s campus at the Chase Center on 200 Packard Ave. Light refreshments will be served at this event.

Residents will want to get their popcorn ready for screenings of multiple movies with themes of black history and empowerment on Thursday, Feb. 19 at the Armory Performance Hall on 191 Highland Ave. The first film, Disney Pixar’s 2020 movie Soul will be played for children and families, followed by the 2018 drama The Hate U Give which is geared toward young adults. The event will conclude with a third film for adults only that has yet to be announced.
The celebration will conclude with Black Youth Excellence Brunch open to younger residents on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 12 p.m. Food will be served at the Somernova Dojo on 15 Prozperi Way.
